The prints, the cuts, the sexiness, the almost holographic prints, Iconique loves the 'We Are Handsome' swimwear by Australian designers Indhra Chagoury and Jeremy Somers! What a waste not to wear them off the beach as well, they are perfect for long sultry days and nights... Rarrr!
Hints of sportswear, geometric cuts, playful silhouettes and a touch of Arabia summarize the spring-summer 2011 collection of Khalid Al Qasimi. A strong collection for those men that dare to try something different, but only when it's up to their standards.
Khalid Al Qasimi was introduced to the lavish luxuriance of the Middle East from an early age, and it is this that sits at the heart of his work. Qasimi’s background clearly breathes through his collections, from lush draping to the lavish embroidery and applications in his S/S 2010 women collection or the playful way he shows hints flesh in his male collections and mixed classic tailoring with kaftanesque overcoats. Somehow you imagine these creations were made to be worn in a warm breeze that keeps all in motion.
Growing up in the northern region of the Arab Emirates, in Sharjah, Khalid was exposed to a lifestyle influenced by the glamour and sophistication of the Middle East. He was introduced to the luxuries of life during his formative years. The Al Qasimi family would travel the world, presenting to their children a world beyond their homeland. After being awarded an art scholarship at the age of 9 Khalid arrived in the United Kingdom.

The designer attended the University College London for Hispanic Studies and French Literature. Upon graduating in 2001 he decided to follow his passion of architecture and enrolled into the Architectural Association. After a 3 month trip to South America Khalid decided to embark on a journey to build a luxury lifestyle brand. To build the foundation necessary Khalid entered the notable Central St. Martins in fashion design.
It was in 2008 that QASIMI launched its debut men and womenswear collection at London Fashion Week.

Belgian lingerie company Marie Jo L'Aventure has formed a unique partnership with Belgian fashion duo A.F. Vandevorst to create a special collection Marie Jo L'Aventure by A.F. Vandevorst. The line was launched during an intimate presentation at the graduation fashionshow of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp which showed once again how the Belgian industry is able to link innovation, wearability and talent in a way so many other fashion capitals aren’t able to. The collaboration marks the first of the plan to create more collector’s collection in collaboration with other designers, architects, artists and other creative masterminds. The collection made with the Belgian fashion duo was inspired by the pièce unique the Antwerp fashion duo made for the lingerie brand and which will travel all over the world.
An Vandevorst and Filip Arickx were given free rein to express their view on the lingerie of future. They designed a pièce unique: three wooden dummies, attired with felt corsages. Elements could be added or removed, like a three-dimensional puzzle. No seams - only copper split pins. Resulting in a modular object that pays homage to women and their lingerie.
Based on this pièce unique and in collaboration with A.F. Vandevorst the Marie Jo L'Aventure stylists designed the collector's collection. Marie Jo L'Aventure's interpretation of the coarse-looking felt of the pièce unique is a very soft high-quality material printed with a true-to-life photographic print of felt, which produces an trompe l'oeil effect. The copper split pins attaching the felt to the dummy are rendered as studs, which add a rugged touch to the lingerie. The result is a sculptured look that doesn't compromise on sexiness.
Iconique thinks this lingerie is meant to be seen, at least as a teasing detail underneath an A.F. Vandevorst jacket…
Iris van Herpen showed a preview of her collection ‘Crystallization’ at Amsterdam Internation Fashion Week. The collection was inspired by the flexibility , transparency and structure of water… intricate splashes were created with the futuristic technique of 3D printing in collaboration with .MGX by Materialise from New York and renowned architect Daniel Widrig. Van Herpen’s craftsmanship and knowledge of leather revealed itself in the structured dresses based on the Molecular geometry of water in its frozen state… it was in some of these pieces that the commercial potential of Van Herpen’s avant-garde label became more visible.
Although stunning in its execution and an impressive presentation, something didn’t feel quite right. Maybe it was the abundance of silhouettes, cuts and tricks that distracted the utterly sexy shapes Van Herpen can deliver or the splashes that (in all their amazingness) looked out of place on a walking model… The preview leaved one hungry for the complete collection, maybe that will fill in the gaps we were looking for...
The full collection will be revealed at London Fashion Week in September.
Antoine Peters (just like his logo) is the synonym of a smile, always quirky and not taking the usual paths, he surprised us once again. Inspired by the Lady Gagas of today's world and the clothes they wear, the Dutch fashion designer presents his SS11 collection in a way never done before; he turned the trend around and presents his designer clothing by means of a 'pop-video' and 'pop-song' for which he even signed a real record deal! Although no big surprises in terms of silhouettes, we love the blown-up colouring page print coloured with make-up and must admit that song is quite catchy… Now that’s a new way of pop culture product placement!
The new fashion label “fORS” launch their debut womenswear collection ‘Différance’ with a video presentation and exhibition in Gallery Mart House in Amsterdam. For one evening fORS invaded the gallery and presented their collection in an unconventional way: with a collection-film by Jasper de Bruin & Bart Voorbergen and an exhibition.
fORS is a new Amsterdam-based fashion label, founded by Patricia Neubauer and Bettina Keller. Neubauer graduated at the fashion department of the Instituto Europeo di Design in Milan and Keller studied fashion at the Gerrit Rietveld academy in Amsterdam. fORS originates from the latin ‘fors’, meaning both destiny and coincidence. The label’s creative base is founded in the two visions of Neubauer and Keller. Together they create fashion collections that embrace their differences and similarities resulting in highly conceptual garments that are both abstract and wearable. Friction between symmetry and asymmetry, bold uneven cuts and contrasts are the starting points for their designs. An essential and unique aspect of fORS garments is the adaptability of every piece. The wearer is able to express their individuality by modifying the garment to their own wish.
Oscar de la Renta sent a little surprise down the runway for his Resort 2011 collection show: an iPad clutch. The designer recently acquired an iPad himself and promptly created a ‘clutch’ to complement the device. We love the exotic feel of the Mosaico Embroidered Leather pattern in Carnation, White, Marigold or Stone and with ultra suede lining you are assured your iPad will remain scratchless during your summering…
