IRIS VAN HERPEN CRYSTALLIZATION

Iris van Herpen Spring Summer 2011

Iris van Herpen showed a preview of her collection ‘Crystallization’ at Amsterdam Internation Fashion Week. The collection was inspired by the flexibility , transparency and structure of water… intricate splashes were created with the futuristic technique of 3D printing in collaboration with .MGX by Materialise from New York and renowned architect Daniel Widrig. Van Herpen’s craftsmanship and knowledge of leather revealed itself in the structured dresses based on the Molecular geometry of water in its frozen state… it was in some of these pieces that the commercial potential of Van Herpen’s avant-garde label became more visible.

Although stunning in its execution and an impressive presentation, something didn’t feel quite right. Maybe it was the abundance of silhouettes, cuts and tricks that distracted the utterly sexy shapes Van Herpen can deliver or the splashes that (in all their amazingness) looked out of place on a walking model… The preview leaved one hungry for the complete collection, maybe that will fill in the gaps we were looking for...

The full collection will be revealed at London Fashion Week in September.

PETERS' POP CULTURE PRODUCT PLACEMENT

Antoine Peters (just like his logo) is the synonym of a smile, always quirky and not taking the usual paths, he surprised us once again. Inspired by the Lady Gagas of today's world and the clothes they wear, the Dutch fashion designer presents his SS11 collection in a way never done before; he turned the trend around and presents his designer clothing by means of a 'pop-video' and 'pop-song' for which he even signed a real record deal! Although no big surprises in terms of silhouettes, we love the blown-up colouring page print coloured with make-up and must admit that song is quite catchy… Now that’s a new way of pop culture product placement!
