The Fashion Department of the Arnhem Academy of art and design has constantly grown since its foundation in 1953. Following their finals, a high proportion of former students have succeeded in making a name for themselves in many areas of the fashion world, both at home and abroad. Its list of graduates is impressive, Viktor&Rolf, Spijkers & Spijkers, Saskia van Drimmelen and Jeroen van Tuyl all attended the Arnhem academy. More than one hundred students, both Dutch and foreign, are currently taught by a qualified team of at least twenty teachers.

The graduation show of 2006 leaned more towards commercialization than experimentation and especially succeeded in offering strong menswear collections, such as those by Swen Driessen, Seksarit Thanaprasittikul  and Sander Lak. Sanaz Andishmand’s transparent, sexy ‘jump suits’ referred back to her Iranian roots ‘I want to show the modern, strong and self-conscious woman behind the tschador’. Daniela Eschweiler was inspired by Josephine Baker, her leggings of silk-screen printed fabrics in metallics and catsuit were especially eye-catching. Both sexes were served by Hiro Kanai’s balanced collection whose shoes could become a great success, while Sanne Schrijver’s collection displayed a group of macho-women wearing holster gillets and a lovely grey trenchcoat.
Although the runway showed a professional group of designers, the audience was hungry for a bit more of the drama and extravagance graduation shows are famous for and lacked moments of true excitement. Students: unleash the drama in 2007!
